Help us to grow!

Our Mission

NoMi Forest Explorers is a nonprofit dedicated to cultivating a lifelong love of learning and movement through nature-based education—open to all learners, whether traditional students, homeschoolers, or children of diverse ages and backgrounds.

By blending hands-on exploration with environmental education, we inspire curiosity, foster community, and introduce pathways to future careers in the natural sciences. Through weekly forest school meetups, field trips, kitchen classroom sessions, nature education tools, Forest & Clovers Crew 4-H club, and guest presentations, we provide rich, real-world experiences that connect children with the natural world and with each other.

Beyond our regular programs, we also take field trips across the state, giving learners the chance to explore Michigan’s diverse ecosystems and communities. We partner with 4-H as well as local and regional organizations such as the Manistee Conservation District (MCD), National Forest Service (NFS), National Park Service (NPS), and many others to bring a wide variety of learning resources, expertise, and opportunities directly to our families. These collaborations ensure that our children gain a deeper appreciation of nature, discover new career pathways, and experience the power of community-based education.

Our Vision

NoMi Forest Explorers envisions a Northern Michigan (NoMi) community where every child and family has equitable access to meaningful outdoor learning experiences that inspire curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong connection to the natural world. We imagine a future where children learn through hands-on exploration, inquiry, and discovery—growing not only in knowledge, but in creativity, compassion, and resilience.

At the heart of this vision is the development of a dedicated outdoor learning center. It will serve as a year-round home base where families of all backgrounds can gather to learn, play, and grow together. This space will allow us to expand programming, host community events, and serve as a regional hub for nature-based education and environmental stewardship.

We envision strong, lasting partnerships with local, regional, and state organizations to connect families with real-world science, sustainability practices, and Michigan’s diverse ecosystems. Through inclusive programming, affordable access, and family-centered scheduling, we will continue to remove barriers so all children—regardless of income, background, or learning style—can thrive outdoors.

Grounded in thoughtful planning, community collaboration, and long-term land stewardship, NoMi Forest Explorers will grow as a sustainable organization supported by volunteers, partners, grants, and donors—ensuring this work continues for generations to come.
